Songs from the 80s always seem to put a smile on my face and make me feel happy.

From Michael Jackson and Madonna to Prince and Cyndi Lauper, there was no shortage of talent during this decade. The 1980s was a decade of big hair, outrageous fashion, and some of the best pop music ever made. From new wave to hair metal, there was something for everyone in the 1980s music scene. And while some people may pooh-pooh the music of the 80s as being nothing but mindless fun, there’s actually a lot to like about the music of this era. Here are just a few of the reasons why I think 80s music is awesome:

The lyrics are often about having a good time and enjoying life.
The musicianship is often excellent, with talented singers and musicians creating some truly memorable tunes.
There’s a wide variety of genres to choose from, so there’s something for everyone.
80s music is just plain fun!
The Fashion
One big factor that propelled 80s music forward was the fashion of the decade. Big hair, tight clothes, and make-up were all indicators of the style at the time. For women, shoulder pads and tight skirts were in. Men wore suits with big shoulder pads and tight pants. The look was aggressive and in your face. This is likely why many people respond so positively to 80s music today; it is an assault on the senses that can be very addicting.
The Hair
There is something about the hair in 80s music videos that just catches my attention. Maybe it’s the big hair, the teased hair, or the crimped hair. Whatever it is, I can’t help but watch 80s music videos and admire the hairstyles.
I’m not sure if it’s because I grew up in the 80s, or if it’s because the hairstyles are just so different from what we see today. Either way, I can’t help but appreciate the hair in 80s music videos.
The Movies
In the movies, the 80s were all about escapism. Adventures in time travel (Back to the Future), in outer space (Star Wars), and beneath the sea (The Abyss) took moviegoers to new worlds without ever having to leave their seat. And when they did have to leave their seat, it was often for a good laugh courtesy of comedies like Ghostbusters, Trading Places, and Three Amigos.
The Toys
One of the things that makes the 1980s such a great decade for music is the advent of new technologies and production techniques that were used by artists to create sounds that were never before possible. This was especially true in the realm of pop music, as synthesizers and drum machines became increasingly prevalent in the decade. Others enjoy watching the old music videos and seeing how different they are from today’s productions. And for some people, it might just be a nostalgia for simpler times; after all, the 1980s were a decade of peace and prosperity before the events of 9/11 changed everything. Whatever the reason, there’s no doubt that 80s music is still popular today.
