Controversial Christian Rock Songs That Caused a Stir
Since the dawn of Christianity, there have been those who believe that rock music is the work of the devil. This belief was no doubt strengthened when Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, started incorporating Christian themes into his music. Over the years, there have been many Christian rock songs that have caused a stir among believers and non-believers alike. Here are ten of the most controversial Christian rock songs of all time.
1. “Saved” by Bob Dylan: This song caused quite a stir when it was released in 1979 because it seemed to suggest that salvation could be found outside of Christianity. The lyrics say, “I was so lost I should’ve died/ But I was saved by a woman’s love.” Many Christians interpreted this to mean that Dylan had converted to Islam or some other religion. However, Dylan has always maintained that he is a Christian and that the song is about how Christ can save us from our sinful nature.
2. “Paradise City” by Guns N’ Roses: This song includes the line “Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty.” Some Christians took offense to this, believing that it was promoting hedonism and promiscuity. Others saw it as a positive message about finding heaven on earth. In any case, it’s one of the most iconic rock songs of all time and continues to be played at stadiums around the world.
3.”One Way Out” by The Allman Brothers Band: This song tells the story of two lovers who are on opposite sides of the law. One is serving time in prison while the other is free but feels trapped in her life nonetheless. The chorus includes the lines “One way out/ Is all I’m asking for/ Please don’t make me stay here no more.” While some saw this as a cry for help from someone who was stuck in a bad situation, others saw it as an endorsement of crime and violence. Either way, it’s a great song with a powerful message.
4.”Jesus Christ Pose” by Soundgarden: This song caused quite a stir when it came out in 1991 due to its graphic lyrics which seem to mock Jesus Christ and his followers. The opening lines are particularly controversial: “Lookin’ like you need / A little bit o’ mercy / From above / You’re startin’ to look like / A statue Of Jesus Christ”. While many Christians were understandably offended by these lyrics, others saw them as an accurate portrayal of how some people use religion as a tool for power and control rather than true faith or spirituality.
5.”Soldiers Of Christ” by Rage Against The Machine: This song caused controversy due to its anti-war message which some Christians interpreted as being anti-Americanism or even anti-Christianity itself. The lyrics say “Killing in God’s name is still killing/ No matter what flag you wave”. While Rage Against The Machine are known for their political activism, they have always denied being against any specific country or religion with this song or any other material they’ve written over their career
