about

Webster’s dictionary defines “music” as “the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity”. And boy-howdy does Jack James enjoy making that there “music”.

Third Culture Kid is James’ 7th album in 8 years, continuing a harder rocking folk sound that began on “Letters of Last Resort” while taking his songwriting in new and unexpected paths. This includes intermittently ditching the whole folk part, with a result that walks a fine line between Elliott Smith’s XO album and Silver Jews’ Tanglewood Numbers.

The creative evolution on this album is all over the writing rather than merely the instruments used. The previously defined “temporal relationships” between the “tones” is played with a lot. Guitars are given long bridge sections to build organically. Gift Horse's Teeth hints at a backing band for minutes before feinting. Sean Grady feels like the most immediately catchy single, with a hook & guitar sound straight out of the Billy Corgan playbook.

Third Culture Kid is a term for someone raised in an environment which is very different to their parent’s environment. Wikipedia lists Barack Obama as the first example and only example I’ve ever heard of. So I guess, in many ways, that makes Jack James the Obama of folk music.

But who is Jack James?

Webster’s dictionary defines “Jack James” as “The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary. Did you mean "Jackhammer"?

Urgh, thanks Obama.

Track Name: Red Rover
And we just pretend
We just got out a bend
Foaming at the mouth
And we're headed south

Red Rover, Red Rover

Join the other side
You can be mollified
Look at your childhood friends
Look how they make pretend

Red Rover, Red Rover
Track Name: Every Time I Fall I Miss The Ground
Crowd the bus stop in the rain
Sing a song to keep the cold away
Travis comes in handy here
Flooded streets are rivers with blocked drains

Try to fall, miss the ground

Everything is on the cards
And everything is on the table too
Hey look I know just what to do
I play the bedroom but I play the kitchen too

I keep it down, close to the ground
Try not to fall, neighbours think I'm loud

One by one by one, feel nothing [oh my...]

Day and night they fall and rise
Every time I fall I miss the ground
Daydream till the sun goes down
Tell me what is my absurd reprise?

Try to fall, miss the ground

One by one by one, feel nothing [oh my god]

Eternally we fall and rise
Every time I fall I miss the ground
Daydream I rise when I'm found
Tell me what is my absurd reprise?
Track Name: Frida Kahlo
Restless are we now that we've bought some rest
Burned at both ends, well the middle was best

And I know it's true, and I learned it from you

All this knowledge, forget what you say
Myriad memories I can't store away

Tried to drown all my sorrows, they learned how to swim
All these bad situations I find myself in

We smoke cigars then you're dropped off at war
I fight at home but I don't know what for

All this knowledge, can't follow your train
Myriad memories I can't store away, away

Tried to drown all my sorrows, they learned how to swim
All these bad situations I find myself in
Track Name: Time of Death is Unknown
Send the boys on out to get me
I can't find my way home
The roads look different in the night
Time of death is unknown

Send the girls on in to help them
They can't do it alone
Send the clowns in while you're at it
Time of death is unknown

Who are you all at my bedside?
I just want to go home
Sing a song I've long forgotten
Time of death is unknown
Track Name: Gift Horse's Teeth
The kids are at the porch
Reminds me how I was before
Their faces open wide
They're looking like they might, again

They're looking underneath
Wonder if they'll have the reach
Discover my gift horse's teeth
They were never ours to keep, I know

And so you had a son
Everyone else was having one
Make a hobby of your house
Everybody has their doubts, you know?

As the waves lap on your cheek
Enjoy your day out on the beach
As she stares into the abyss
Another thing for her to miss, I know...
Track Name: Hidden Rose
Who'll ever find the rose
Who'll ever find the rose, man

He takes a chance
And by god, there's a man

Sam has only friends
This does not make sense

Trace fibers of a rope
Nail scratches on the throat
It's quite a dance
And by god, there's a man

Sigh from your mouth
I don't mind, let's have an early night

Who'll ever find the rose
Who'll ever find the rose, man
Track Name: Love the Core
Far alone
Run away from home
And you say you want more
But you love the core

On the train from New York
Just shy of Chicago
Left at the fork
Drop down the floor

Stare for yards
Thousand as times as far
And his chest weighs him down
A long coat to drown

Why don't they get back
From your dad's heart attack
While the night is young
Let's tie both our tongues
Track Name: Dog Sits Nice
My dog sits nice on the floor
This I try to ignore

My dog likes sitting at home
Staying in with a bone

My dog sits nice on the floor

My dog takes the colour away
His darkness can't be escaped

My black dog is always there
He sits at me and he stares
And helps me remember

My dog sits nice on the floor

And helps me remember
Track Name: Sean Grady
Sean Grady died last week
And he called out for his mum
Yeah he called for his dead mum

Sean lived to 94
Last ten years spent bored
Man, he looked so fucking bored

Meanwhile I sit on the floor
Acting so superior
With my shit songs, wanna hear some more?

I face up towards the roof
Jumping through meaningless hoops
Like a hamster on a loop

And don't go listening to what you want
Afraid of desire
And everyone is someone till they're not
Evade the high flyer
Track Name: The Root Cause
Maybe it's not what it seems
Fake smile, mimic the head lean
'Cause you're a third culture kid
Don't know what you did
Drive down that strange divide

Find out now what it was
Dive down to the root cause
Over the rise, where I find it's waiting for you
Shoulders of giants, that I'm tying over the noose
Over again

I know you wander the maze
The stroll turns into a stray for days
And where has it went?
This straight arrow's bent
Drive down that strange divide
Track Name: I Have Walked Straight Into
Had a dream last night we were hanging out
We were going to rent a car and drive

I knocked you for six: "No one gives a shit"
Was my advice to keep you sane and alive

I have walked straight into
Look what I've walked into
I have walked straight into

Before I was born and after I'm gone
I don't really exist much at all

Tried to learn something about everything
And nothing about anyone
Track Name: Oh No, Not This Again...
Oh no, not this again...

I was by your bedside
Where I was by your wife's side
You looked so damn young
But you were already gone

I would have came quickly
If I knew you were so sickly
You looked so damn young
And your heart was beating strong

Oh no, not this again...

I went to the gate
Where the ballerina flowers wait
I looked up for your wave
As the car rolled away

Oh no, not this again...
